the green goddess smoothie

It’s officially Spring and I am craving my greens more than ever. It must be something about Mother Nature calling to awaken my body out of the slumber of winter and step into the revitalization, freshness and vitality that Spring offers. The green goddess smoothie is light, satisfying and full of fresh flavors like mint leaves and sweet pineapple.

I make this green smoothie all the time. It’s especially great to make for a quick and filling breakfast if you wake up wanting to start your morning on a detox note. I also love to have this green smoothie during the afternoon for a pick-me-up.

Either way, you’ll want to have this smoothie be apart of your regular routine. I always feel so nourished after drinking a green smoothie. I love knowing I’m giving my body fresh foods that are nutrient-dense while allowing myself to really care for my body.

The Green Goddess Smoothie Ingredients

Spinach – the beloved green that creates the tell-tale deep nourishing color of a green smoothie. Spinach is also loaded with vitamins and minerals and protects our bodies from free radicals which compromise our immune system. Interestingly, spinach contains vitamin K – a vitamin that aids in maintaining bone health.

Pineapple – I prefer purchasing pineapple and cutting it up myself into chunks to freeze. Call me particular, but I find that freshly cut pineapple offers a superior flavor. Feel free to purchase a bag of frozen pineapple as well!

Mint leaves – Fresh mint leaves create such a dynamic flavor in this green goddess smoothie. Use more or less based on your preference!

Banana – Always try to let bananas get a few brown spots before freezing. This not only enhances the nutrients, but the flavor as well! I like to freeze a large batch and always break my bananas in half before freezing.

Avocado – A good rule of thumb is to purchase avocados that aren’t all the way black. This will ensure your avocado isn’t overly ripe. Once the avocado is completely black and easy to press, it is ready to be cut. Did you know avocados are actually considered a fruit and have the highest fat content. No need to worry, it’s the good kind of fat! The monounsaturated oils found in avocados aid in lowering blood pressure, lubricating joints and boosting fertility for women trying to conceive.

Lemon – I always have a large bag of fresh lemons on hand. I cook so often and love squeezing fresh lemon on most of my food! The same is true in a green smoothie, the fresh lemon creates a pop of freshness and flavor. Don’t skip it or you’ll be sorry! It also helps to cut through the density of the avocado.

Coconut Water – I love using coconut water in smoothies for a boost of hydration and electrolytes. Be sure to check nutrition labels and opt to purchase coconut water that is organic and doesn’t have any added sugar. Ideally, the only ingredient should be organic coconut water.
