the best creamy chocolate smoothie bowl

Eating a smoothie bowl during a freezing WI winter? Well, a girl’s gotta dream of the hot weather! But seriously, I love smoothie bowls, especially this chocolate smoothie bowl. It’s my go-to-chocolate-craving bowl. Smoothie bowls are simple to prepare and an easy way to give your body a healthy dose of superfoods. Plus, who doesn’t love how fancy they look!?

This creamy, chocolate smoothie bowl tastes like childhood to me. Similar to soft-serve chocolate ice-cream, but better and healthy for you!

Chocolate Smoothie Bowl Ingredients

Smoothie bowls only require a few ingredients. I love having them for breakfast to make it easy on myself and to feel like a breakfast queen. This smoothie bowl tastes just like a chocolate banana milkshake, so nostalgic of childhood.

Bananas

Frozen bananas are key in smoothie bowls. I like buying 2-3 bunches of bananas at Costco so I can stock up in my freezer. To get the best flavor and nutrients, wait until the skin is yellow with a few brown spots.

To prepare your bananas, simply peel the ripe skin, cut in half and layer neatly in a gallon-size ziplock bag. Freeze them up for all your smoothie bowls needs!

Fun fact about bananas: they contain a prebiotic compound that feed good bacteria in the gut and have antacid effects that protect the stomach from ulcers. Soothing on the stomach and delicious? I’d say that’s a win, win.

Raw Cacao

Raw cacao is magic. Not only is it a nutrient-dense superfood containing vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, it will also help perk you up! Theobromine, a powerful stimulant naturally occurring in raw cacao, provides the body with natural, jitter-free energy. Perfect for mornings!

Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is my favorite sweetener. I’m lucky enough to get it from my mom’s cupboard which is overflowing with jars of locally made pure maple syrup. It’s a great alternative to refined sugar, providing the body with vitamins and minerals. For optimal flavor and health, buy 100% organic maple syrup or locally made maple syrup.

Almond Milk

Almond milk is so good. I love making it homemade when I can, otherwise unsweetened vanilla almond milk works perfect too. Feel free to use any of your milk preferences here.

Toppings

Toppings are so fun. They are totally customizable to meet your fancy. I love topping bowls with chia seeds, cacao nibs, coconut flakes and hemp hearts as a basis. Nut butters such as almond butter and peanut butter taste great too! Fresh strawberries would make this bowl over the top, healthy banana split anyone?

Blender Recommendations

A great blender means an investment. I recently purchased a Vitamix blender and could not be happier. I used to buy cheapo blenders, but they never lasted me more than 6 months which got frustrating. If you will be blending on the regular, it’s more than worth it!

Enjoy making this delicious smoothie bowl, it’s a treat you wouldn’t even think is healthy for you!

the best dreamy, creamy chocolate smoothie bowl

  • Author: Emily Schield

Description

Smoothie bowls are simple to prepare, nutrient-dense and fun to make! This is one of my favorite combinations, especially when a chocolate craving hits.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 frozen bananas
  • 2 tablespoons raw cacao
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk

TOPPINGS

  • 1 tablespoon hemp hearts
  • 1 tablespoon cacao nibs
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 tablespoon PB2

Instructions

1. In a blender, add the bananas, cacao, maple syrup and almond milk. Blend on low, slowly turning to medium-high and using a tamper (plastic device that helps stir smoothie bowls), stir until smooth.

2. Using a spatula, pour into a bowl and smooth it over.

3. Add the toppings in a line to look extra fancy!

Notes

I recommended a Vitamix blender. The quality is impeccable.

PB2 can be substituted for organic peanut butter, almond butter, or any nut butter of preference.
